Homeopathy is both a science and an art.
During our course of regular studies in a Homeopathic college or institution we learn the science of HOMEOPATHY as it is taught as a part of the regular curricula. After this institutional education is complete the REAL TEST of a Homeopath begins. At this juncture it is the time to start to learn the ART OF PRACTICE OF HOMEOPATHY. Homeopathy as an art has seen tremendous developments during the past about 20 years. Various schools of thought have evolved and emerged successfully to take the practice of Homeopathy to new and greater heights. New provings conducted by master homeopaths like Jeremy Sherr, Rajan Sankaran and many others have put HOMEOPATHIC therapeutics on a new pedestal. Not only this new concepts, ideas and thematic approach has given a different blend of colours to the art of practice of Homeopathy. Among these stalwarts Dr. M L sehgal, (Delhi,India), Dr. Rajan sankaran (Mumbai, India) and Dr. Jeremy sherr, Dr.Jan Scholtan (Netherlands), Dr. Prafula Vijaykar (Mumbai, India) are prominent.
Dr. M .L. SEHGAL of Delhi , India had been my teacher who taught the Revolutionised technique of case taking based on Mental symptoms alone. The approaches used by the other stalwarts like Dr. Jan Scholtan (NETHERLANDS) and Dr. Rajan sankaran (DELHI,INDIA) are also widely used in the analysis of the cases as their concepts as an art of practice of Homeopathic medicine when applied to the cases bring wonderful results.
First of all we need to familiarize ourselves with the exact dictionary meanings of the words used in the MIND section of a standard repertory. We need to understand the meaning of the following terms:
Each of the above emotions have their individual qualifications having one common meaning which conveys a feeling of discomfort to the patient. What kind of discomfort is being experienced in Fear, Anxiety and Anguish has to be seen and understood by the Homeopath. This will be known the way the patient speaks or expresses himself.
Similarly, emotions such as Anger,Irritability, weeping, sadness, depression, joy, excitement, amusement etc. each have their qualifications in the individual case presenting before the Homeopath. Accordingly, the emotions which are an outlet of the feelings of the patient expressed through his speech becomes a rallying point to understand the mental state of the patient. This is then utilized to construct the suitable Mind Rubrics for the patient in question.
Each word coming out of the mouth of the person during sickness paints a true picture of the inner turmoil going in side him at that point of time. Further each word shall be uttered with some stress coupled with a special tone and style of speech. WHAT HE SAYS? HOW HE SAYS? And WHY HE SAYS? WHAT HE DOES?. These are the FOUR elements to be understood and imbibed by each and every homeopath to grasp the essence of the inner turbulence going inside the sick person. The fourth element WHAT HE DOES? Is witnessed through the gestures and the body language being used by the person when sitting in front of the homeopath and narrating his or her story related with the sickness. The body language being the unspoken is the most unpolluted form of language can be relied upon maximum, but the condition is that the homeopath should be trained enough to decode the meaning and intention of the patient behind each gesture and body language used by him. I feel it appropriate to illustrate it with an example. Many of us must have encountered a patient who while narrating his problem uses simple language to convey his points of concern such as, Dr. do not give me a remedy which might aggravate my condition as I have heard that Homeopathy first aggravates. And please do not ask me for any laboratory investigations as I am afraid some thing bigger might not be revealed. Now while saying all this he is making a gesture by revolving his finger in an anticlockwise direction. Now for the alert Homeopath this patient has presented his full picture through the narration of his concerns by using simple language and a hand gestures. Now to analyse his mental state connected to his problem and to find the similimum there is a fear of betrayal in him and that is why he is cautious in alerting the homeopath not to give him some thing which might aggravate his condition meaning causing him further suffering. He is averse to getting investigations also which means he does not want things to come to light. The following rubrics from the Mind section of the Repertory form his mind picture.
The single common remedy that comes after repertorising on mental symptoms alone is HYOSCYAMUS. Only one dose in 30 c potency shall do wonders.??AFTER THE REMEDY IS PRESCRIBED BASED ON MENTAL SYMPTOMS ALONE THE BODY REACTS IN A BEFITTING WAY AS TAUGHT BY OUR MASTER DR. M .L. SEHGAL.
Certain abnormal discharges can be thrown out by the system of the body through any of the natural outlets of the system in a bid to cleanse itself of the load of toxins which are responsible for sickness. These discharges can be in the form of
Along with this the patient feels an inner feeling of wellbeing and a corresponding decline in the physical sufferings. The discharges if they establish follow a set pattern of odd numbers in terms of time and frequency of such episodes. Well established Herring's law of cure is also witnessed.
The above is only one example. You must be listening words from the patients in their simple language which we do not attach much importance but in order to make a successful prescription as per rubrics of the mind these common expressions are of paramount importance as they bring out and express the true sick person at that point of time. For this the Homeopath has to be very focused and an unprejudiced observer.
